Eldi í opnum sjókvíum er enn lang hagkvæmasta framleiðsla fiskeldis í dag. Uppbygging á Íslandi hefur verið mikil, farið úr átta þúsund tonnum 2015 í rúmlega 50 þúsund tonn í fyrra. Ef vel text til verður hægt að auka framleiðslu í yfir 100 þúsund tonn næsta áratuginn. Slík framleiðsla myndi skila yfir 100 milljörðum í útflutningstekjur og miklum verðmætum á Vestfjörðum og fyrir austan.

Farming in open sea pens is still by far the most cost-effective aquaculture production today. Development in Iceland has been significant, going from eight thousand tons in 2015 to over 50 thousand tons last year. If everything goes well, it will be possible to increase production to over 100 thousand tons in the next decade. Such production would generate over 100 billion in export revenue and great value in the Westfjords and the east.
