With the adoption of Act No. 36/2011 on Water Management and the publication of Iceland’s first river basin management plan, a comprehensive and coordinated policy for the protection of all water bodies and aquatic ecosystems in Iceland was established for the first time. The adoption entails extensive changes in the governance of water resources, affecting all sectors that utilize water. In this presentation, we examine its implications for aquaculture.

Með innleiðingu laga nr. 36/2011 um stjórn vatnamála og útgáfu vatnaáætlunarinnar 2022-2027 var í fyrsta sinn mótuð heildstæða stefnu um verndun alls vatns og vatnavistkerfa á Íslandi. Vatnaáætlunin felur í sér umfangsmiklar breytingar á stjórnun vatnsauðlinda, og hefur því áhrif á allar atvinnugreinar sem nýta vatn.
