Mechanical treatment is among the main strategies for controlling sea-lice in farmed salmon, but it causes fish health and welfare issues and increases the susceptibility to diseases. Another strategy is the production of large-smolt in RAS. However, pathogens established as house strains in RAS can increase the risk of diseases. Here I will give an overview of the most important fish health and welfare challenges with focus on some of the most important pathogens in Faroese aquaculture.
