Kjartan Ólafsson, Iceland Offshore Salmon
Offshore salmon farming has been in the discussions lately as an addition to traditional sea pen farming. It could deliver alternative potential with less environmental impact, less problems with parasites and better fish health. Deep sea conditions will provide more stable temperatures and stronger currents, providing better environment for the salmon. And It will give potential for large output and deliver product closer to the final salmon market.
However positive factors must be counterbalanced by its high investment cost, much higher than traditional sea pen farming.
